Ayurveda is
the oldest surviving complete medical system in the world.
It passes its attention on absolute and perfect health.
"Ayur" means "Life" and "Veda"
means "Knowledge". Ayurveda is a "Science
of life". This is 5,000 year old natural herbal
health care system has been recognized the world over as the
most perfected 'body-mind' health care system.
Ayurveda,
the 'Science of Life' originated from the divine memory of
'Lord Brahm a'
in the time immemorial and practiced by the
ancient 'Rishis' in India. Susruta, Dhanvanthari,
Vagbhata, Madhavakar, Dridhbala, Salihotra, Charaka,
Bharadwaja are much adored 'Gurus' if Ayurveda. Each
'guru' has his own 'Samhitas' in which they detailed about
their valuable observations and experiences. The art of
Ayurveda had spread around in the sixth century BC to Tibet,
China, Korea and Sri Lanka carried over by the Buddhist monks traveling
to those lands.
Ayurveda
identifies human being as a microcosm (small universe) that is
part of macrocosm (universe). The universe as well as
human being is made of five elements - the Panchabhutas -
Akash (Space), Vayu (air), Jal (water), Agni (fire) and pritvi
(earth). The rhythm of life is intimately connected with
the rhythm of nature. When human body is perfectly in
tune with the nature, the body, mind and spirit will be in
perfect health, resulting in uninterrupted flow of creative
energy. Physical disea ses are due to improper eating, lack of
exercises and ignoring the cycles of season or our age.
Human body can heal itself if this is corrected.
Ayurveda helps to establish perfect balance between inner and
outer world with the help of herbal medicine. Ayurvedic
health care system lays emphasis o body constitution of the
individual. The first step is to find out the body
constitution through careful examination. Food habits,
medicine and treatment has to be decided according to body
constitution.
Ayurveda
identifies 'Vata' (air, the moving energy), 'Pitta' (fire, the
digestive energy), 'Kapha' (the energy that protect the
sensitive tissues with mucus) as the three vital energies, the
balance of which results in perfect health. The
combination of these energies varies in every human being and
that determines the body constitution. These three
energies are responsible for all the physiological and
psychological problems within the body and mind-dynamic forces
that determine growth and decay. It is important to
realize that these three are forces (energies) and not
substances. Kapha is not mucus; it is the force that
causes mucus to arise. Pitta is not bile, but that which
causes bile to be produced and they are called doshas -
literally means 'faults' - as they indicate the fault lines
along which the system can become imbalanced. Every
physical characteristic, mental capacity and the emotional
tendency of a human being can therefore be explained in terms
of the 'tridoshas' when the doshas are in equilibrium we
remain healthy. All ayurvedic herbal medicines and treatments
are indented to maintain a perfect balance between these three
energies. Through five millenniums, Ayurveda has
perfected this science and the vast body of knowledge created
a health care system that gives its practitioners and edge, no
other system can match.
